Dr. Margittai graduated from the University of Ottawa School of Medicine, in 1983, cum laude. She completed a rotating internship in Montreal (McGill University), then returned to Ottawa for three years of her psychiatric residency training. The fourth and final year of residency was split between the Clark Institute (Psychosomatics unit), and the Toronto Western Hospital (Sleep Disorders service, and the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison service).
For the next 20 years, Dr. Margittai was on staff in the department of Psychiatry at Womens' College Hospital. She was head of the Consultation-Liaison Service, and Coordinator of Undergraduate Psychiatric Education. She also introduced a Derm-Psych Clinic for dermatology patients with chronic skin conditions and comorbid mental health issues.
Concurrently, since 1996, Dr. Margittai has run a private psychiatric practice specializing in Women's Mental Health. This practice is no-longer able to accept new referrals.
In 2007, Dr. Margittai joined the staff of North York General Hospital in a part-time capacity, and introduced a mindfulness-based stress reduction group (MBSR), to better address the psychological needs of patients with chronic medical illnesses. She has taken a week-long intensive training course in MBSR given by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts), and has subsequently intensified her own daily practice of yoga and mindful meditation.
Most recently in 2011, Dr.Margittai relocated her private office- PsychSyt, and began offering MBSR groups there on Tuesday evenings.
